ENERGY PERFORMANCE TEST CENTRE

energy performance test centre

The Living Lab at Tŷ Gwyrddfai is an energy performance testing facility designed to assess how building materials, components and construction systems perform under controlled environmental conditions. It uses two chambers to simulate indoor and outdoor environments on either side of a test wall, allowing factors such as temperature, humidity and pressure difference to be varied and monitored.

  • Total size =  6m (L), 5.5m (W), 5m (H)
  • The cube is split into two chambers with a dividing wall in between, named ‘internal’ and ‘external’, approx 3m (L)
  • External chamber temperatures from −5°C to 31°C
  • Internal chamber temperatures from 10°C to 28°C
  • External humidity between 30%-90%
  • 10 Pa differential pressure
  • Rain simulation
  • Lighting – 450 lux on both sides.
  • Temperature and humidity sensors within both chambers and the wall cavity.
  • Three pressure sensors in both internal and external chambers,

Tom used to work at the KFC in his hometown of Colwyn Bay before it mysteriously burned down. He then spent several years “on the lam” in East Germany, where he worked as an animator in Berlin. When the wall fell, Tom came home.

He enjoys climbing and hates ice-skating.
