Wales: the Land of Science

Low-Carbon Focus

M-SParc is a key part of the low carbon focus of North Wales, linking to exciting developments taking place on the ‘Energy Island’ of Anglesey. We are the buzz at the centre of this hive of activity, placing ourselves and our tenant companies at the heart of new and exciting developments.

There is a chance to create a world-leading cluster of low carbon energy companies, and provide links to companies within the supply chain. The recently announced Nuclear Research Institute based at Bangor University brings world-leading capacity in nuclear engineering to the region for the first time ever.

The Enterprise Zone

Anglesey is located in an EU designated Tier 1 Area and is therefore eligible for the highest level of grant aid available. The Welsh Government operates a suite of SMART programmes to support innovative enterprises with growth potential. Other companies may attract help through Business Wales. Further information on eligibility and intervention rates per project can be found here.

M-SParc staff will assist companies and eligible projects to identify potential support available from the Welsh Government and also from Innovate UK, Research Councils, Research Institutes and currently European Research Funds including Horizon 2020.

M-SParc is a designated site on Anglesey’s Enterprise Zone, which will attract additional support for companies and projects locating there.

The Benefits

  • Priority treatment of applications for funding by the Welsh Government
  • Reduced interest rates on Finance Wales loans for eligible SMEs
  • Apply for business loans as well as equity and mezzanine investments
  • A Business rate relief discretionary scheme which operates on an occasional call basis (there have been 3 calls to date) aimed at new starts with growth potential and those increasing the size of their workforce
  • The Welsh Government is prioritising the delivery of Next Generation Broadband in priority locations which include Enterprise Zones

Investment: M-SParc staff will help with introductions with private investors, Business Angels networks, Finance Wales and Commercial Banks to provide investment finance for companies meeting eligibility criteria.

We all have great ideas, but how many become reality?

To turn that idea into a successful venture something extra is needed. Something that helps that initial spark light the way to a better future.

Wales has a great deal to shout about and M-SParc has the perfect conditions to inspire and enhance a new generation of scientists to add to our nation’s already great scientific tradition.

Live, Work & Invest

LIVE North Wales offers the perfect work life balance. There’s a certain pace to life here which is contagious and satisfying. From the soaring peaks of Snowdonia and Anglesey’s miles of unspoilt coastline to world-class heritage and seafood the rest of the world savours, we know there’s plenty to tempt you away from the office.

WORK However, M-SParc is determined to create a working environment which will not only make it a pleasurable place to build your business, but also bring the outside in through great building design and inspiring open spaces. Forget the lengthy commute and the stresses of big city living and swap to a better quality of life without the compromise.

INVEST Wales is currently at the forefront of energy development and research in the UK. With links to excellent research and development activities at Bangor University, and with a range of SMEs in the energy and environment sector emerging with innovative ideas, North Wales is becoming a wise choice for investment. The Anglesey Energy Island™ Programme is a collective effort between several stakeholders within the public and private sector working in partnership to put Anglesey at the forefront of energy research and development, production and servicing, bringing with it potentially huge economic rewards. The programme will be a vehicle for employment growth and development opportunities. Harnessing a rich mix of energy streams, including nuclear, wind, tidal, biomass and solar; together with associated servicing projects Energy Island provides major potential to achieve economic, social and environmental gains for Anglesey and the wider North Wales region.

As a leading University with an international reputation for teaching and research as well as a strong commitment to the economic, social and cultural well-being of Wales, Bangor University is proud to be at the heart of the new Menai Science Park.

Tom used to work at the KFC in his hometown of Colwyn Bay before it mysteriously burned down. He then spent several years “on the lam” in East Germany, where he worked as an animator in Berlin. When the wall fell, Tom came home.

He enjoys climbing and hates ice-skating.
