Wales: the Land of Science

Low-Carbon Focus

M-SParc is a key part of the low carbon focus of North Wales, linking to exciting developments taking place on the ‘Energy Island’ of Anglesey. We are the buzz at the centre of this hive of activity, placing ourselves and our tenant companies at the heart of new and exciting developments.

There is a chance to create a world-leading cluster of low carbon energy companies, and provide links to companies within the supply chain. The recently announced Nuclear Research Institute based at Bangor University brings world-leading capacity in nuclear engineering to the region for the first time ever.

The Enterprise Zone

Anglesey is located in an EU designated Tier 1 Area and is therefore eligible for the highest level of grant aid available. The Welsh Government operates a suite of SMART programmes to support innovative enterprises with growth potential. Other companies may attract help through Business Wales. Further information on eligibility and intervention rates per project can be found here.

M-SParc staff will assist companies and eligible projects to identify potential support available from the Welsh Government and also from Innovate UK, Research Councils, Research Institutes and currently European Research Funds including Horizon 2020.

M-SParc is a designated site on Anglesey’s Enterprise Zone, which will attract additional support for companies and projects locating there.

The Benefits

  • Priority treatment of applications for funding by the Welsh Government
  • Reduced interest rates on Finance Wales loans for eligible SMEs
  • Apply for business loans as well as equity and mezzanine investments
  • A Business rate relief discretionary scheme which operates on an occasional call basis (there have been 3 calls to date) aimed at new starts with growth potential and those increasing the size of their workforce
  • The Welsh Government is prioritising the delivery of Next Generation Broadband in priority locations which include Enterprise Zones

Investment: M-SParc staff will help with introductions with private investors, Business Angels networks, Finance Wales and Commercial Banks to provide investment finance for companies meeting eligibility criteria.

We all have great ideas, but how many become reality?

To turn that idea into a successful venture something extra is needed. Something that helps that initial spark light the way to a better future.

Wales has a great deal to shout about and M-SParc has the perfect conditions to inspire and enhance a new generation of scientists to add to our nation’s already great scientific tradition.
